Funding
TOMM is a collaborative partnership project and is currently funded through a number of different channels.
Core funding has been provided by TOMM stakeholders on Kangaroo Island until 2006/2007.
- Kangaroo Island Council
- Kangaroo Island Development Board
- Tourism Kangaroo Island
- Kangaroo Island Natural Resource Management Board
- Department for Environment and Heritage
Initially seed funding of $54,000 was accessed through the Office of National Tourism (now Department of Industry Science and Resources) in 1997.
In the past additional funding has been provided by:
- South Australian Tourism Commission have provided core funding over several years, and now provide funding for a variety of small project linked to TOMM.
- Office of Workplace Relations and Small Business to assist with business expansion based upon increasing tourism growth - $40,000 over two years
- Kangaroo Island Wilderness Tours were the first private contributor to the TOMM project on Kangaroo Island providing $1,000 in 2000.
- Adventure Charters of Kangaroo Island provided $500 to the TOMM project in 2000 and has continued to provide in-kind and financial support.
- Previously the Kangaroo Island Health Service and Agriculture Kangaroo Island (AgKI) have been partners to the TOMM.
It has been identified that that there is a need to establish a sustainable funding mechanism for TOMM, rather than its reliance on support from stakeholders and grants. This has been identified as a priority for TOMM to evolve and improve. More information will be provided about this as it becomes available.
Sustainable Funding
TOMM is always aiming to explore more sustainable funding options, to date a variety of options have been considered including:
- The development of a Tax or Levy for visitors to the Island
- The development of a Foundation, or environmental charity
- A Corporate Sponsorship program
- The provision of consultancy services regarding TOMM
An number of these options are continuing to be explored, as TOMM strives to become less reliant on Government funds.
