 The Kangaroo Island Strategic Tourism Plan has been prepared to provide a clear vision and direction for tourism growth for the Island over the next 20 years.  The Strategic Plan is available to be downloaded:

A working document to guide implementation has also been produced - "Strategies to Action: Priorities for Implementation";

The Plan provides a description of the key areas to be addressed to facilitate an integrated approach to meeting the economic, environmental and social goals for Kangaroo Island. The plan was developed in partnership with:
  • Kangaroo Island Development Board
  • Kangaroo Island Council
  • Tourism KI
  • TOMM
  • Department for Environment and Heritage, Kangaroo Island Region
  • KI Natural Resource Management Board
  • South Australian Tourism Commission


The Plan covers the following key areas:

  • the economic contribution of tourism to the regional and how to enhance this;
  • growth scenarios and targets;
  • current trends in who is visiting the region;
  • positioning, branding and marketing initiatives for Kangaroo Island;
  • understanding the value of the Island's ecological assets and how to protect these;
  • market characteristics to attract and how to match their needs with product;
  • product gaps and opportunities for product invigoration;
  • additional infrastructure and facilities required to support tourism experiences;
  • building a culture of service and support;
  • need for changes to planning policies to facilitate sustainable tourism development.

The Plan also contains an Implementation Strategy and Checklist to give effect to the strategic directions contained in the plan.

The development of the Plan was overseen by a Steering Committe (made up of representatives from the funding bodies) who will continue to meet on an as needs basis to ensure the Implementation fo the plan continues to remain a priority. 

Since the completion of the plan in June 2006, the Sterring Committee have completed several important steps:

  • Determined that TOMM will be the body to monitor and report on the implementation of the plan;
  • Undertaken a minor review of the actions in the plan, making some minor adjustments prior to endorsement;
  • Formal endorsement of the Plan occured in January 2007;
  • The Top 10 strateigies for implementation have been determined, and a working document outlining altered actions and priorities for implementation has been produced, "Strategies to Action: Priorities for Implementation";
  • All stakeholder agencies have been requested to ensure the Top 10 strategies, along with strategies which identify thm as a lead OR support agency are included in their 2007-2008 Business and Strategic Planning processes;
  • Began working with the South Australian Tourism Commission to explore partnership funding to expediate implementation.
