Environmental
There are currently two environmental indicators reported by TOMM:
Indicator:
Number of Hooded Plover Pairs
This indicator contributes to the following optimal condition:
Major wildlife populations attracting visitors are maintained and/or improved where tourism activity occurs
An indicator report card is available for this indicator, providing further detail.

A Hooded Plover Fact Sheet is also available giving further information regarding these birds on Kangaroo Island, and some actions that can be taken to assist in the recovery of this species.
Indicator:
Percentage of total waste diverted from landfill on Kangaroo Island
This indicator contributes to the following optimal condition:
Kangaroo Island is implementing appropriate waste management practices
An indicator report card is available for this indicator, providing further detail:

Other Environmental Indicators
There are two other environmental indicators originally identified for the optimal condition "Major wildlife populations attracting visitors are maintained and/or improved where tourism activity occurs" including:
- The number of seals at a designated tourist site; and
- The number of osprey at a designated tourist site.
The environmental indicators have posed the biggest challenge to TOMM to date. This is due to the nature of monitoring environmental factors. TOMM recognises the importance of developing key partnerships with environmental agencies, such as the Department for Environment and Heritage and the Kangaroo Island Natural Resources Management Board to progress this component of TOMM. This is a key focus for the Leave Only Footprints Project.
Other indicators originally suggested for TOMM include:
- The proportion of visitors to the Island who visit natural areas zoned specifically for managing visitors;
- Net overall cover of native vegetation at specific sites;
- Energy consumption / visitor night / visitor; and
- Water consumption / visitor night / visitor.
