Indicators
At the core of TOMM is a practical set indicators that monitor the status of tourism on Kangaroo Island. The TOMM indicators were developed through a series of workshops with Government, industry and community. TOMM is currently undertaking a major review of the indicators and acceptable ranges. This will result in a much more robust model with the formal reporting of over 5o indicators. The review will incorperate many of the lessons learnt from nearly 10 years of operating TOMM.
Each indicator has an identified acceptable range, and is reported on as data becomes available. Trends generated through the indicators are reported to the TOMM Management Committee and then any action taken by management agencies is reported as the outcome. The indicators fit into four categories including:
The TOMM Indicator Review (currently underway) has also proposed a new section of Governance Indicators to monitor the management and implementation of TOMM on Kangaroo Island.
TOMM simply indicates whether the various aspects of tourism are within the acceptable range or not. If not then possible management actions are developed to remedy the situation.
A variety of methods are used to monitor the TOMM indicators. However the primary source of information for many of them is the TOMM Visitor Exit and Resident Survey, detailed survey methodology for these two surveys can be found under: Reports.
The trends that TOMM creates can then be used to predict change and help people to test and discuss new ideas in an informed and rational manner. These trends are also used to better inform decision making processes.
This process is indicated in red, in the TOMM process flow diagram:
